Product details
The TP-Link Tapo C420S2 is a network-capable model via RJ45 network cable for outdoor use. If you want to guard an outdoor area, the TP-Link Tapo C420S2 is recommended. Infrared light enables the model to record videos even in darkness. The infrared illumination is mirrored outside the perceptible level so that people and objects are easily visible. The length of the infrared beams determines how far the surveillance device's detection range extends in the dark. This size formulates in how many metres distance persons can be perceived. In the case of the TP-Link Tapo C420S2, it is specified as 15 metres. The IP camera is addressed via the computer network. This way, you can access it via a web interface to make settings or operate the device. This surveillance device is dustproof as well as weatherproof and can therefore be set up in outdoor areas. Resistance is a significant quality feature of an outdoor model to ensure that certain environmental influences are withstood. The IP value proves the functions of the resistance to the environment. Here it is IP65. A high number indicates the extent to which the camera is sufficiently protected against dust and water. The TP-Link Tapo C420S2 has a high-scaled resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. It creates clear images in high resolution. Tiny details are moreover visible in an enlarged video section, such as faces, car licence plates or clothing details. If medium to high capacity memory is available for use, you can also archive longer periods of surveillance. The monitoring device is able to respond appropriately to pre-defined events. If such an event occurs, it is detected, stored and further action is taken. One possibility is to emit a signal tone.

The TP-Link Tapo C420S2 smart home set is a good solution for anyone looking for a flexible security solution for outdoor use. The surveillance cameras and hub not only impress with their good build quality. You also get good image quality with a sharp QHD resolution. However, I would have liked more than 20 fps for the moving images...
- High resolution, top picture quality
- Power supply via rechargeable battery or micro USB cable
- Connection of the hub via Ethernet (100MBit/s) or WLAN (Wi-Fi 4)
- Storage locally via microSD or optionally (plan) in the cloud
- Motion detection with zones as standard
- Quite loud sound alarm
- Cheapest camera set tested
- Reliable motion detection
- Video recordings somewhat dark and spongy
- Colours often pale
TP-Link makes smart outdoor surveillance particularly affordable. The set of 2 costs less than 200 euros. The test winner doesn't even have a camera for that. The video quality isn't great, but it's okay for the price. And: thanks to the base station for local recordings, you don't necessarily need a monthly subscription for cloud storage.

- QHD resolution with good picture quality
- Motion detection differentiates between people, vehicles and pets
- Expansion to a smart home possible
- Support for Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and IFTTT
- local storage
- Easy commissioning and control
