The "Game of the Year" is the Oscar for board games. In 2024, "Sky Team" wins the race because - according to the jury - it impresses across the board in terms of gameplay, atmosphere and theme.
"Sky Team" is a game for two people. You take on the role of a pilot duo and take on 20 airport missions with different levels of difficulty. The aim is to land the jet safely at various airports around the world.
Why did "Sky Team" lose out to the other nominees - "Captain Flip" and "Auf den Wegen von Darwin" - prevailed? The jury gave the following reasons:
For 45 years, the association "Game of the Year e. V." has been honouring the best board game innovations. The award consists of three categories: Game of the Year, Connoisseur Game of the Year and Children's Game of the Year. Last year's winners were Dorfromantik, Challengers and Mysterium Kids the coveted titles.
In addition to the "Game of the Year", the jury also presents an award for the "Connoisseur Game of the Year". These games are aimed more at experienced players. They are more complex and usually more time-consuming than conventional parlour games. The winner in this category was "e-Mission". A co-operative game in which you have to stop climate change with ground-breaking projects.
The creator behind "e-Mission" is none other than Matt Leacock. A successful author who has already created hits such as "Pandemic" or "Die verbotene Insel". It is also unique that Leacock was nominated for the Connoisseur Game of the Year with two titles this year: "e-Mission" and "Ticket to Ride Legacy"
The jury argues the victory of "e-Mission" with the following words:
Nominated for "Connoisseur Game of the Year 2024" were also "Die Gilde der fahrenden Händler" and, as already mentioned, "Zug um Zug Legacy".
Little game fans don't miss out either. Every year, the jury presents an award for the "Children's Game of the Year". The winner in this category was "The Magic Keys". In this game, children aged six and up roll the dice through a magical forest of keys and try to collect as many crystals as possible.
With "Game Factory", a game publisher from Switzerland is also represented in the award ceremony. Among other things, they are known for "ABC SRF3" and "Klask". The jury gave the following reasons for choosing this game as Children's Game of the Year:
Nominated for "Children's Game of the Year 2024" alongside "The Magic Keys" were "Grosse kleine Edelsteine" and "Taco Katze Pizza Junior".
This year's "Game of the Year" award winners were consistently convincing. "Sky Team", "e-Mission" and "The Magic Keys" offer unique and exciting gaming experiences. Which of these games excites you the most? Share your opinion and experiences in the comments.
