Galaxus sales climb by 18 per cent
2024 saw Galaxus increase sales on its platforms by 18 per cent to a total of 3.228 billion Swiss francs. Despite declining trading volumes, the company successfully grew its market share in Switzerland and neighbouring European countries and attracted many new customers.
Swiss online retailer Galaxus recorded strong growth in the 2024 financial year. Group-wide platform sales spanning Digitec and Galaxus in Switzerland and Europe rose by CHF 484 million, bringing total sales to CHF 3.228 billion. That’s an increase of 18 per cent on the previous year. Net revenue generated by deliveries and services rose 17 per cent to CHF 2.9 billion.
Wider range, lower prices, larger customer base
A contributing factor behind this stark growth was the company’s efforts to expand its product portfolio. There are now eight million products for sale on Digitec and Galaxus, representing an increase of almost 25 per cent. This was partly achieved by bringing numerous new marketplace merchants from Switzerland and further afield on board. Galaxus’s decision to lower many of its prices and bring them in line with European levels last year is also likely to have driven the uptick in sales. As a result of this improved offering, many new customers started shopping on Galaxus in 2024. In percentage terms, the strongest growth came from French-speaking Switzerland and the canton of Ticino. Ten per cent of shoppers in these areas were new customers. Meanwhile, customers based in Liechtenstein placed the most orders per person per year, as was the case in 2023.
In total, more than 4.5 million people shopped on Galaxus in 2024, with 1.2 million of these customers based in Germany, Austria and other EU markets. Products from the Supermarket and Health + Beauty categories proved particularly popular in Switzerland, with sales up more than 30 per cent on the previous year. In Germany and other EU markets, Galaxus achieved strong growth in all product categories, generating platform sales totalling 362 million euros. That’s an increase of 27 per cent on the previous year. In 2024, there was particularly high demand for mobile phones, notebooks and PC components in Digitec Galaxus’s international markets.
Boosting capacity, expanding service offering
By beginning construction of its new logistics centre in Neuenburg am Rhein in Southern Germany, Galaxus laid the foundation to meet the expectations of its growing customer base in terms of product range, quality and punctual delivery. The company’s existing logistics centres in Switzerland are already running at full capacity. By opening a new facility in Southern Germany, Galaxus is killing two birds with one stone. Firstly, it’ll be able to supply Switzerland’s more populated areas quickly and reliably from Neuenburg am Rhein. Geographically, the new warehouse is also ideally situated to serve growing European markets such as Germany and France. Over the next few years, the Migros Group will be targeting substantial further investment in its online business in the European market.
Progress was also made in regards to developing services available on Digitec and Galaxus. Following high demand from the Community, Galaxus disclosed the country of origin of more than one million fashion and sportswear products in spring. Over 20 per cent of products on the site can now be filtered by country of origin. In late summer, the online retailer integrated artificial intelligence (AI) into its shops to answer specific questions from the Community about product information more quickly. It also made improvements to its increasingly popular resale platform. In addition to new products, secondhand items are also sold on Digitec and Galaxus. In 2024, the online retailer made it easier to ship resale products by providing pre-franked packing labels and offering a «Home pickup by Swiss Post» option. A package insert with a QR code ensures payments can be processed fast.
Making sure employees and media know what's up at Digitec Galaxus is my job. But without fresh air and a lot of exercise, I basically stop functioning. The great outdoors provides me with the energy I need to stay on the ball. Jazz gives me the tranquility to tame my kids.
