Every second German enjoys sex toys

No prude Germans: anal plugs, dildos, vibrators and latex vaginas are not only widespread in Germany, they are also much loved. According to a representative survey conducted by the online department stores' Galaxus and the non-profit organisation Jugend gegen AIDS, almost one in two Germans use sex toys.

Oh là là! Germans like it playful: A representative survey by the online shop Galaxus and the non-profit organisation Youth against AIDS shows that almost one in two Germans (47 per cent) now satisfy themselves or their partner with sex toys. The survey was conducted by the market research institute Appinio. 1,008 people between the ages of 16 and 65 were surveyed.

Specifically, 14 per cent of Germans use their sex toys alone, 21 per cent with one or more partners and 11 per cent both alone and with others. A further 11 per cent do not yet use sex toys but are curious. And just over 40 per cent are not interested in sex toys at all.

The 30 to 39-year-olds (65 per cent) are by far the most likely to have fun with vibrators, masturbators & Co. In contrast, the over-60s and under-20s are often too fearful or not interested enough. "As sex education experts, we know that many young people still feel insecure about their sexuality and have a lot of questions. According to our surveys, the median age at which young people have sex for the first time is between 16 and 18. Accordingly, it could well be that young people first want to get to know themselves and their partner's body before sex toys become interesting," says Anna Konopka, board member of Youth against AIDS.

Three out of four do it themselves

The survey also shows that almost three quarters of Germans masturbate (62 per cent), with 30 to 39-year-olds being the most diligent (73 per cent). Incidentally, at 73 per cent, men masturbate significantly more often than women. For the latter, it is only six out of ten.

Women, on the other hand, orgasm significantly more often with a sex toy than men (15 per cent women vs. 5 per cent men), while men orgasm more often without a toy or partner (33 per cent men vs. 24 per cent women). However, Germans are by far the most likely to climax together (51 per cent). This is particularly true with increasing age. However, five out of one hundred women have never had an orgasm.

Our faithful companions

In three out of four cases, people who use sex toys do so at least once a month and in one out of three cases at least once a week. Three out of a hundred even enjoy their sex toys so much that they treat themselves to one or more climaxes every day. The over-60s stand out here in particular, with one in ten sex toy users enjoying their time in retirement to the full.
