Around a year ago, Galaxus, Switzerland’s largest online retailer, expanded to France. A look at the figures for Galaxus in France shows strong growth in the second half of last year. The online store has proven particularly popular with older customers. The most popular product category? Toys.

In early 2023, online retailer Galaxus opened its virtual doors in France. The very first order came from Paris. A customer ordered a gaming mouse.

Around one year and many orders later, it’s time to take stock and a closer look at our customers’ shopping carts.

Galaxus grows in France

After six months of settling in, the volume of orders at Galaxus in France is now growing rapidly. In the last quarter, that’s October to December 2023, our French customers bought 128 per cent more products than in the third quarter.

The French are playful

Our customers or their children seem to enjoy playtime. This was revealed by an evaluation of the most popular product groups on Galaxus. Toys are at the top of the list. LEGO and Playmobil sets are particularly popular. These are followed by the Games + Jigsaw puzzles category, ahead of Dolls + Soft toys.

IT products are the second most popular items to be bought online by shoppers in France. Our customers are particularly keen to order PC components such as hard disks and mainboards. The small household appliances category is in third place.

A look at the bottom of the rankings shows that we still have potential when it comes to fashion. Watches and jewellery in particular very rarely leave our warehouses for France.

The largest age group at Galaxus – silver surfers

28 per cent of our customers in France are 55 and over, closely followed by 35 to 44 year-olds. In contrast, only 6 per cent of our customers are 24 or younger.
