Especially in winter, colds seem to be ubiquitous: many of those who use buses and trains or have to work in a crowded open-plan office will probably struggle with such an illness once or several times a year. A wide repertoire of medicines, teas and more should therefore be available in the house just in case. Another thing to have on hand: a clinical thermometer! In order to control the development of an illness, it is essential to measure the body temperature regularly; after all, this temperature can be used to see to what extent the body has to defend itself against bacteria, viruses & co. - and how it ultimately succeeds in doing so. Such a thermometer can measure in several ways: Once by means of special light beams (IR) on the forehead or ear, or directly on the body, either axillary, orally or rectally. The temperature at which one can speak of a fever always depends on the measuring point, i.e. whether the temperature is taken at the ear, the forehead or elsewhere. The measuring point usually also plays a role in the duration of the measurement - while you have to hold the thermometer in the ear for a few moments until the temperature has been accurately taken, IR thermometers can take the temperature on the forehead within just a few seconds.
