Immediately after the premiere, WIKING released the color-updated version in pebble gray. The late realization of the model building idea by WIKING's chief Fritz Peltzer was well received by collectors upon its announcement – this is what true model building history looks like. Equally fortunate and coincidental, the complete construction templates from that time were rediscovered in the WIKING archive, not only for the long version of the MB G introduced in 1979 but also for the short version. Apparently, discussions with Mercedes-Benz about an industrial order played a role over 40 years ago, as WIKING already presented the well-known G model in 1980.
