The basic rules of Saboteur also apply to the expansion Saboteur 2: At the beginning, each player receives a character card face down. The dwarves must try to dig a path to the gold treasure while the saboteurs attempt to stop them. On their turn, a player can either place a path card in the center of the table and continue a tunnel or play an action card to help themselves or other players or to hinder them. Saboteur 2 includes new path, action, and character cards: dwarves now compete in two teams against each other. New to the game are a chief, profiteers, and geologists. While the chief earns gold for each dwarf victory, the profiteer also receives a share of the gold treasure if the saboteurs win. The geologists do not care about the treasure at all – they want to find as many crystals in the tunnel as possible. Of course, saboteurs are still up to their tricks. The new path cards feature bridges and crystals, as well as ladders and colored doors that can only be used by the corresponding team. New action cards like "Hand Card Exchange," "Inspection," "Theft," or "Hat Exchange" add extra excitement to the tunnel. A round ends as soon as the gold treasure is connected to the starting card or no player can play a card anymore. After that, gold pieces are distributed to all players accordingly, and a new round begins. The player with the most gold after three rounds wins.
