Small World' by Martin Suter is a gripping family drama, but also contains elements of a classic developmental novel and thriller. 

The small world of the factory owner's son Thomas Koch revolves mainly around his parents and his friend Konrad. As a child of rich parents he does not have to worry about poverty and can enjoy his life. Thomas and his friend Konrad could not be more different, one rich, the other from poor backgrounds, but these differences do not disturb the friendship.

From an early age they spend a lot of time together and even as they get older, their lives do not develop far apart. Both stick together in their 'Small World', which Martin Suter describes as very harmonious. Even in old age the gentlemen stand by each other. Konrad is always there when Thomas needs him. He notices significant changes. More and more problems he gets with his short-term memory and even causes a fire. On the other hand, he is plagued by memories from his childhood, which make him do research in his family history. But Thomas' mother wants to prevent this - for good reason. 

Even though 'Small World' started out as a harmonious story about the friendship of adolescents, Martin Suter lets the story take a turn towards a family drama.
