Product details
'Small World' by Martin Suter is a captivating family drama that also incorporates elements of a classic coming-of-age novel and thriller.
The small world of factory owner's son Thomas Koch revolves mainly around his parents and his friend Konrad. As the child of wealthy parents, he doesn't have to worry about poverty and can enjoy his life. Thomas and his friend Konrad couldn't be more different; one is rich, the other comes from humble beginnings, yet these differences do not disrupt their friendship.
From a young age, they spend a lot of time together, and even as they grow older, their lives remain closely intertwined. Both maintain their 'Small World' connection, which Martin Suter describes as very harmonious. Even in old age, the two men are there for each other. Konrad is always available when Thomas needs him. Thomas notices significant changes in himself. He increasingly struggles with his short-term memory and even causes a fire. He is haunted by memories from his childhood, prompting him to investigate his family history. However, Thomas's mother wants to prevent this - for good reason.
Although 'Small World' begins as a harmonious story about the friendship of young people, Martin Suter takes the narrative in a turn towards a family drama.
