In a house among many houses, in an apartment above many apartments, lives a boy named Malte. At first glance, Malte seems completely ordinary. But what no one can see is that Malte is afraid. Afraid of the shadows outside. Only in his bathtub, the smallest bathtub in the world, does he feel safe. And it is here, on a day that seems far too ordinary, that something truly extraordinary happens to Malte: he meets his best friend, Osskar, the pigeon.
