Gustav Schwab, born in Stuttgart in 1792, was many things: pastor, teacher, poet, publicist and editor. His most elaborate project, the "Legends of Classical Antiquity," became his greatest success: Schwab created a colorful and comprehensible picture of antiquity from Greek and Latin poems, chronicles and fragments in a multi-volume retelling. He also took up Homer's "Iliad," which tells of the legendary battle of the city of Troy against the Greek army under Achilles. Matthias Ponnier reads from this powerful stream of images full of intrigue, tragic heroes and beautiful women.
