The narrator character identifies neither as a man nor as a woman. Raised in a shabby Swiss suburb, she now lives in Zurich, has escaped the narrow structures of her origins and feels comfortable in her non-binary body and in her own sexuality. But then the grandmother falls ill with dementia and the I begins to deal with the past: Why are there only fragmentary memories of her own childhood? Why is the grandmother hardly able to distinguish herself from her sister who died at an early age? And what happened to the great-aunt who disappeared as a young woman? The narrator is fighting against the mothers' culture of silence and researches the female bloodline that has not been handed down. This novel is a stylistically and formally unique act of liberation from the things we pass on unasked: gender, trauma, class. Kim de l'Horizon sets out in search of other ways of knowing and transmitting, telling and becoming oneself, undermining the linear forms of the family narrative and approaching a fluid and flowing way of writing that does not fix but opens.
