'Good evening, my dear friends', these were the words with which the TV favourite of the first hour, Dr Bernhard Grzimek, greeted an audience of millions for many years in the programme "A Place for Animals". But the Frankfurt zoo director Bernhard Grzimek was more than just a "television and animal uncle". He was both an adventurer and a visionary who was way ahead of his time. Grzimek's second home was the Serengeti. Numerous adventure trips took him to his beloved Africa. But he also persistently promoted nature conservation in Germany, and we have him to thank for the first German national park, among other things. Bernhard Grzimek died in 1987 at the age of 77 during a tiger training show at the circus. His urn was buried at the stone pyramid above the Ngorongoro Crater, where his son Michael was laid to rest.
