The ends are finished in a soft non-slip plastic, so it won't damage the walls.
However, it only holds well if you don't use the 4 fixing pads (included). You can either screw them down or stick them to the wall with double-sided tape (included).
I am very happy with the barrier, but I don't know if the double-sided tape will come off cleanly or if it will scratch a bit.
