I connected the first one to a cable modem/router from UPC. However, I set the UPC cablecom part to 'throughput' so that it only serves as a cable modem and passes the signal on to the ASUS.
This way the first ASUS can take over the router function. Then connect the other ASUSs as you suggested with a lan cable (backbone).
This works perfectly for me...
