Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine - Special Edition
Hello everyone, I bought this UDM-SE and am basically very satisfied. However, I must admit that I will probably never use it completely due to a lack of experience. I am a complete newcomer to the Ubiquity environment. I use two APs U6 Pro and the remaining Lan ports are used as a normal swich/router for various devices. I hope you can do that with this one? I have pulled in a Lan cable and there is currently only one AP U6 Pro on it. Could I now also hang a POE switch there, connect the AP and use the remaining ports for a PC and a console without having big losses on the WLan due to the switch? Last question: Could I also replace a Swisscom modem (private) with this switch? I have 10GB XGS-PON. A lot of questions, but I would be very grateful if you could take the time to answer them. THANKS
Hi
You can use any port with or without POE. This is just a practical additional function.
You can use it as a modem depending on the ISP. With Seisscom it seems to be difficult or not feasible.
With Init7 it works fine.
Hello pARTLandodlt.
I myself have attached a POE switch to the UDM and it is recognised and also completely integrated into the environment. From this point of view, it doesn't matter what you connect there in the end. But of course it is worthwhile to connect POE devices to it.
For example, I have both the AP' U6 pro on it as well as cameras or doorbells. In other words, everything that I ultimately control via POE. But of course also all "normal" network devices such as TVs, consoles or desk supplies.
I can only say so much about the modem. I'm not using it yet, but I know that the DM can also be used as a modem. That's what the connection with the "planet" is for. This is the connection to the world, so to speak. Complete with fibre optic support. I currently have a Fritz Box in between, because I need it for the house supply of DECT telephones and I don't have the nerve to read up on the matter to see if there are other solutions.
Hope this helps.
Hi PARTLandt
"...I use two APs U6 Pro and the remaining Lan ports are used as a normal swich/router for various devices. I hope you can do that with this one?"
Yes, of course, you can do it that way. There is nothing against it.
"... the AP on it and use the remaining ports for a PC and a console without having any big losses on the WLan due to the Switch?
You can do that, yes. Whether you have losses depends a little on the switch (LAN port speeds vs. parallel WLAN throughput), but in most cases it should be enough if you use at least one gigabit switch.
"... Could this also be used to replace a Swisscom modem (private), for example?"
There are a few discussions about this in the Swisscom forum. https://community.swisscom.ch/t5...
Seems to be more difficult with XGS-PON.
Hope this helps you.
