Sony OLED KD55A8
55", OLED, 4K, 2020Product details
Content can be up-converted to lifelike 4K resolution using Sony's unique features. Twice as fast as the X1 Extreme, the X1 Ultimate accurately analyses and processes data to enhance 4K1 images with lifelike detail and texture. Even images shot in 2K and Full HD are upscaled to nearly 4K by 4K X-Reality PRO using a unique 4K database. Object-based Super Resolution then optimizes each scene to make textures look almost lifelike.
See lifelike colours and discover details in deep blacks and bright peaks in brightness. Pixel Contrast Booster improves color and contrast in bright areas, so you can see scenes with natural shades and nuances, more depth, fine textures, and the rich black contrast only OLEDs can deliver.
From now on, television is as impressive from the side as from the front. The self-luminous OLED screen ensures colour consistency and fidelity no matter where you watch TV from.
With OLEDs, millions of separately controlled pixels ensure sharp and clear images. And with X-Motion Clarity technology, even fast action scenes run smoothly and clearly on the screen. These scenes are precisely controlled to prevent this and ensure that images remain as real as possible by not losing brightness even in fast-paced scenes.
The light of a sunset has thousands of hues, shades and gradations. Super Bit Mapping HDR reproduces them all. It produces a smooth, natural-looking 4K picture during playback without the "streaking" that is possible with other TVs.
Unlike most other TVs, where contrast is adjusted using only a black-to-white contrast curve, Object-based HDR Remaster analyses the colours in individual objects on the screen and adjusts the contrast. Because objects are reworked individually, this TV can produce more colour depth, textures and more realistic images.
A database ensures a clearer picture on the screen by suppressing noise. The other is used to optimize the resolution for greater clarity. These two powerful image optimization databases perform dynamic pixel optimization in real-time. Each of the databases uses tens of thousands of references gathered from years of experience in creating television content and movies.
In conventional televisions with speakers under the screen, sound and picture are often not in sync. With Acoustic Surface Audio, the screen is also the speaker. An innovative actuator behind the screen vibrates gently to create sound not sideways but where the action on the screen takes place - whether it's dialogues from actors or the engine noise of a car.
S-Force Front Surround gives you the same immersive sound as a separate multi-surround speaker. Up-conversion of inputs creates a virtual multi-surround speaker system in your TV.
Voice Zoom lets you hear voices clearly without increasing the volume - ideal for news and documentaries.

The OLED TV from Sony impresses with its minimalist design. Outstanding picture quality is to be expected thanks to the OLED screen, but the Sony A8 is also one of the really good-sounding TVs. Speakers are not visible, because Sony uses the entire screen surface as a speaker. This pays off especially when mounted on a wall, as the Sony does not need a sideboard as a reflection surface...
- colourful, natural picture, rich black
- Powerful processor, fast operation
- Flexible stand concept for soundbar placement
- AirPlay 2, Disney+, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos
- no HDR10+
- No time shift via USB hard disk
The Sony KD-55A8 plays to all the strengths of an OLED TV: rich blacks, vibrant colours and great viewing angle stability. In addition, there is decent sound with extensive features and good ease of use. Only console players might miss the lack of HDMI 2.1 support.
