Product details

Sony's a7S takes photos when other cameras see black. The light-sensitive sensor of the a7S pushes the boundaries of ordinary photography. With ISO 409,600, the first full-frame sensor that can read every
pixel in video mode, and improved Fast Intelligent Autofocus that focuses unerringly even in the dark, the camera's extra-large dynamic range opens up artistic possibilities that eclipse the capabilities of ordinary cameras.

Image quality, noise performance, sensitivity - all features that can be traced back to the heart of every camera: the sensor. Sony has developed the 35 millimeter full-frame sensor of the a7S and equipped it with extraordinary capabilities. On the sensor surface, 12.2 million pixels find plenty of room to fully unfold and go light-catching. Together with the Bionz X processor, this results in extremely low-noise images - with sensitivities between ISO 50 and ISO 409,600 (ISO 200 to ISO 409,600 in video mode).

These features allow the a7S to capture scenes in the dark without a tripod. The camera's extremely wide dynamic range plays to its strengths perfectly in subjects with large contrasts. From brilliant white to charcoal black, the a7S captures all impressions on the sensor in rich nuances.

To ensure that not a single pixel of image information is lost in video mode, the a7S is the first full-frame camera from Sony to support "full pixel read-out" (24p and 25p). This means that every single pixel on the sensor can be read out. No wonder that the 4K videos recorded by the light-sensitive "cat's eye sensor" can show details and colors in every single frame that were previously lost on videos. Moirée and "jagging" - effects that film professionals often complain about in videos - are also a thing of the past.

Thanks to the processing power of the Bionz X processor, the 4K information is output directly from the camera via a high-speed data stream. Via HDMI, the uncompressed data (color subsampling 4:2:2) is quickly transferred to an external recorder or to a compatible monitor for viewing. Full HD videos are also recorded in XAVC S format at 50 megabits per second for the first time in an Alpha. Of course, these can also be output uncompressed via HDMI. In "APS-C mode", the Alpha a7S is even capable of 100 or 120 frames per second in HD resolution (1280 x 720 pixels). This allows videos with up to five times slow motion.

Individual image profiles, S-Log2 Gamma, Time Code / User Bit functions and the possibility to use sensitive microphones via XLR adapter make professional filmmakers sit up and take notice. The extremely precise "Fast Intelligent Autofocus", on the other hand, benefits filmmakers and photographers alike. Down to a light value of -4, the camera captures every subject at first go. The a7S also boasts all the features that have already delighted users of the a7 and a7R: OLED viewfinder, WiFi function and PlayMemories Camera Apps, for example.
