Reviews & Ratings
The small Lumix GX9 achieves the best image quality with its 20-megapixel sensor, while the Lummix G81 has the edge in terms of features thanks to splash water protection and longer battery life, among other things. It also scores points for speed with longer raw series.
- 4K photo-video mode with 30 frames per second, focus stacking and post focus
- Dual image stabiliser (sensor and lens)
- Dust and splash-proof housing with compact dimensions
- Attractive value for money
- Increasing image noise from ISO 3200, visually disturbing from ISO 6400
A lot of equipment for comparatively little money, that is ? once again ? Panasonic's recipe for success. Just like its little sister, the G70, which we rated as great value for money in our test in issue 09/15, the new Lumix G81 comes up trumps with a really competitive price. For around 900 euros recommended retail price, you get a camera with high-quality, useful and innovative features that definitely...
The Canon EOS M5 delivers high-quality shots, is easy to use and is small enough to fit in a jacket pocket. But the Panasonic Lumix G81 can do almost everything a little better, it is noticeably faster in continuous shooting and records videos in 4K instead of just Full HD.
- High speed
- High image quality
- Large, bright viewfinder
- Weatherproof housing
A successful mix: the Panasonic Lumix G81 feels good in the hand, is protected from rain and dust with a suitable lens and delivers photos and video in high quality. The G81 reacts quickly in continuous shooting, but the autofocus sometimes misses the mark with fast-moving subjects.
- Fast autofocus
- weatherproof
- heavy
Compared to the G70, the G81 is less angular, but has a larger grip. Another new feature is the viewfinder with power-saving function: it switches off and the display remains off when the eye moves away from the viewfinder. This extends the battery life. In testing, the G81 shone with its fast autofocus, quick series and good image quality.
- Even high ISO values up to ISO 3,200 can still be used well
- Very high frame rate (in the lab: 9.5 frames/sec. with no limit to the number of frames)
- Very short switch-on time (0.85 sec.) and waiting time until the first picture (0.74 sec.)
- Integrated image stabiliser (for photo and video)
- Eleven Fn keys can be customised (Fn6 to Fn10, however, are "touch keys")
- 4K photo mode with 30 frames per second at around eight megapixels
