Das Gehäuse des J785DW braucht in der Breite Raum wegen der Ausbuchtung für die dicke XL-Schwarzpatrone. Der Vorlageneinzug nimmt 20 Blatt auf, faxen kann das Gerät nicht. Die Fotopapier-Kassette muss man nach vorn schieben, über den Treiber lässt sie sich nicht auswählen. Hinter einer Klappe verbirgt sich der USB-Host-Port und Slots für SD-Karten sowie Memory Sticks...
Ganz ähnlich wie sein Schwestermodell muss sich auch dieser Brother am Ende des Testfelds einordnen. Die Gründe dafür sind sehr ähnlich: eine sehr schwache Druck- und Kopierqualität sowohl bei Texten als auch bei Farbseiten. In allen anderen Testkategorien gibt es zwar gute Bewertungen für das Gerät, doch das kann die vorhandenen Schwächen nicht kompensieren.

Einen ähnlichen Weg wie Epson mit Ecotank oder HP mit Instant Ink geht Brother mit dem DCP-J785DW und dem Programm Inkbenefit. Das Gerät an sich ist teurer, die Tinte dafür jedoch günstiger, da in den Tanks mehr Inhalt steckt.
