Easy expansion of the NAS volume

With the DX517, the storage volume of a DS1517+, for example, can easily be doubled. However, if you expand a single volume with multiple hard drives using the DX517, you need to know that in the event of a power failure or accidental disconnection of the Sata cable connecting the expansion to the DS, for example, the raid volume will be destroyed if the additional hard drives on the expansion are no longer accessible. Therefore, Synology recommends creating a separate volume on the expansion.

I expanded an existing volume on a DS1517+ with 5x8Tb to a total of 65TB using the DX517 (5x8TB), which worked fine and straightforward. However, when I realized that the expanded volume would be lost in the event of a simple power failure (e.g. a fuse blowing), I wanted to shrink the volume again and create a separate volume on the DX517, but this is technically impossible.
To secure such a large volume, you need an additional UPS, so that you can shut down the DS specifically and safely in case of power failure.

If you set up the DX517 as your own volume, you can easily use the volume as a backup medium.
If you want to expand an existing volume with the DX517, you are well advised to connect the DS together with the expansion to an additional UPS to prevent an unintentional total data loss. A separate backup for such data volumes is indispensable anyway.

However, the price difference between a DS1517+ and a DX517 is only Fr. 200, which is why it is better to go for a new DS for an additional volume. The DX517 does not have its own processor and is only connected to the DS via a Sata cable, which also affects the performance.

Since the DX517 (when fully populated) adds 5 disks to the existing raid, it would certainly also make sense to set up one of the additional disks as a *hot spare" (emergency spare disk). If in a raid array of 10 hard drives 2 of them fail at the same time, the raid is also gone.

So if you absolutely need to increase an existing volume, the DX517 is the only way to go. However, if you just need to add more storage, a new DS is the better, faster and more secure option.
