The upscaling of HD Blu-ray discs is fantastic. It does that really well. DVD content, on the other hand, is displayed normally.
But the DP-UB9004 delivers the picture miracle of 4K content with even more contrast and colour depth.
Coupled with an LG Oled panel, your lower jaw hits the tabletop and stays there for a long time.
This player may not be a cheap purchase, but it delivers more gadgets than the best Swiss army knife.
Go for it at 800-900 francs.

There are very few real alternatives at this price. However, those who hide the device in a cupboard or in another room will sorely miss operation via app, internet or Bluetooth. Voice control via Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant has been switched off until 2023. A Chromecast built-in solution would be desirable, as it would be much more flexible than the few fixed services such as Netflix and the like, but the device is from 2018, when this solution did not yet exist. Despite all the weaknesses, I would buy the device again because, as mentioned above, there are almost no alternatives. In addition, the device revitalises my music and film collection, because I have never been able to perceive them in such a hammer-like way.

Previously I used the Oppo UDP-203, but I felt it was a risk to switch to the Panasonic UB9004 because the Oppo is such a good player. But the change has only been worth it for me.
The picture is visibly better than with the Oppo, and I noticed this mainly with the UHD's in the darker areas. The HDR optimiser is a real hit, even if I only use it to adjust the tone curves (e.g. 4000 nits film -> 1000 nits output). But interestingly, the Dolby Vision picture is also visibly better with this player.
Then there is the sound. All known formats are output via HDMI (at least via bitstream) and sound really very good. But this could also have something to do with my new receiver. But what I didn't expect: I connected audio CDs to the receiver via a high-quality (not too overpriced) RCA cable and was amazed. I really didn't expect such good audio quality, and I've probably never heard it before. So my little CD collection is revived after all :-).
The negative thing is the speed. The operation is not the problem, but sometimes the pop-up menus of the discs. Normally they run smoothly. But I have a few discs that are very jerky and were displayed smoothly on the Oppo 203. That is, their animations.
All in all, I only regret one thing: that I hadn't switched to the Panasonic earlier...

I previously used a Sony UBP-X800M2, which isn't entirely bad either. The Panasonic is in a completely different league in terms of picture quality, colour, detail, HDR display and sound reproduction (connected to an 11.2 AV amplifier with decent speakers and cables via an extra Oehlbach HDMI cable). Now I can fully understand and almost accept the price difference. Even the occasional hangs, picture and sound failures of the Sony are now finally a thing of the past, which for me was the main reason for choosing the Panasonic.
