Treadmill sales hit new record
Sales of treadmills have taken a running jump, with online retailer Galaxus recording a year-on-year sales increase of 85 per cent in 2024. This sharp uptick in sales across Germany, Austria and Switzerland was especially pronounced in the second half of the year – and the trend’s showing no signs of stopping. In January, customers bought 64 per cent more treadmills than in the same period last year.
During the pandemic, treadmills were selling like hot cakes. Demand then temporarily dipped in 2022, only to pick up again in the years that followed. And in 2024, it downright exploded. Treadmill sales made an impressive comeback, shooting up 85 per cent.
Working on your fitness, one step at a time
This treadmill trend illustrates that more and more people want to train flexibly, regardless of the weather or their gym’s opening hours. «The self-improvement craze has probably played a part in all this. A lot of people track their exercise levels on their smartwatch, and if they don’t hit their daily target, they do a quick workout on the treadmill,» says Nina Gurt, who handles parts of the Galaxus sports range. «I’m convinced that more and more people are adding a treadmill to their working-from-home setup. Fitting in a leisurely stroll during your team meeting means you kill two birds with one stone, right?», adds Nina with a smile.
Indoor jogging trumps freezing outdoor workouts
The treadmill boom’s increasingly apparent when you look at the second half of 2024. Fifty-one per cent more of the devices were sold in the last six months of the year than the first six months. Rising sales during that period indicate that many people are using the cooler months to pursue their fitness goals. Plus, treadmills seem to be a welcome alternative to exercising outside when it’s chilly.
Running into the new year
This upward trend’s still going strong in 2025. By the 23 January, Galaxus had already sold 64 per cent more treadmills than it did over the whole of January 2024. This makes them the sixth best-selling piece of sporting equipment of the year so far.
Looking at the data, we can assume a fair few people have gone into the new year with the resolution to live healthier, more active lives.
