Transferring data and settings to the new iPhone 15 doesn't work? iOS 17.0.2 should help

Just in time for the launch of the iPhone 15, Apple has released an update to iOS 17.0.2 for its latest smartphones. Among other things, it is intended to fix a problem with the direct transfer of data when setting up a new device. With iOS 17.0, the transfer of settings and data from another iPhone does not work in many cases.

Set up first, then update, then set up correctly

If setting up your new iPhone 15 works straight away, you don't need to read any further. If you have any problems, updates or the iCloud can help.

In the Digitec Galaxus editorial team, the error occurred on all test devices of the new iPhone 15. It was not possible to transfer data directly from an old iPhone.

It is unclear whether the iPhone 15 or the old devices are to blame for the problems. Therefore, make sure that your old iPhone has the latest software version.

Also update your iPhone 15 to iOS 17.0.2 - even if it's a pain. To be able to install the update, you first need to set up the smartphone in at least a rudimentary way. Once the update has been successfully installed, reset the device and start the setup process again. Everything should now work.

iCloud as a fallback option

If you don't want to take the diversions of setting up, updating and setting up again, you can also choose to transfer data via the iCloud. Of course, this is only possible if you have already saved a backup of your old iPhone in the iCloud. In addition, the transfer to the new device takes quite a long time depending on the internet connection.
