Sony Xperia 1 V

Sony wants to set new standards in photography with its latest smartphone. The Xperia 1 V features a stacked sensor with 2-layer transistors for the first time.
The Xperia 1 V is the first smartphone to use a stacked CMOS sensor. It is said to have better noise performance in low light and more natural colours. Sony is also trying to score points with audio functions and a non-slip casing.
Stacked sensors have so far only been used in high-quality cameras, such as the Sony Alpha A1 from 2021. The sensor in the Xperia 1 V is a modification of the technology with transistor pixels in two layers. Sony has also presented it in 2021 but has not yet used it. The Xperia 1 V is the first smartphone with such a 2-layer sensor.
Image sensors contain photodiodes that convert light into electrical signals and pixel transistors that control these signals. In conventional image sensors, the photodiodes and pixel transistors are positioned next to each other. Sony has managed to place them on top of each other. This allows both levels to be optimised and improved. In smartphones, this should lead to a reduction in noise and more dynamic range in the end result. In photo cameras, the faster readout speed and the prevention of the rolling shutter effect have so far been the main arguments in favour of the sensor technology.
The main camera of the Xperia 1 V with the stacked sensor has a resolution of 52 megapixels. There is also an ultra-wide-angle camera and a telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom. Like the front camera, both have a resolution of 12 megapixels.
If you already know the user interface of the Sony Alpha camera series, the Sony Xperia 1 V will look familiar. As with the Xperia 1 IV, Sony uses the same menu structure for the smartphone in landscape format as for the cameras.
Now you can also make use of the functions in portrait format. Previously, the menu selection did not tilt. As photos and videos in portrait format are increasingly in demand due to social media, Sony has adapted the feature.
Last but not least, if you have a Sony Alpha camera, you can use the smartphone as a second screen.
The back of the Sony Xperia 1 V has a rough surface that is reminiscent of Sony's system cameras. It should be easy to grip and not leave fingerprints
There is also a haptic button on one long side: you can use this as a shutter button like on a camera and use it to go directly from standby to the camera app.
In addition, the phone is also ready for a few photos in rainy weather. It is IP65-protected against dust and water splashes.
Sony also focuses on listening to music. The stereo speakers are at the front on the edge of the display and not on the side of the frame as on many smartphone models. This means the sound comes directly to you from the front of the display. If you still prefer to listen to music with headphones, Sony still offers the familiar jack plug.
The Sony Xperia 1 V has a 6.5-inch OLED display in 21:9 film format and with 4K resolution. The refresh rate is up to 120 hertz. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor is also included.
You have 12 gigabytes of RAM and 256 gigabytes of internal memory at your disposal, which can be expanded with a microSD. The memory card module can be opened manually. A 5000 mAh battery is installed. The Sony Xperia 1 V weighs 187 grams.
The Sony Xperia is expected to be available from the end of June for 1399 francs or euros in black, silver grey or dark green
