Shimano presents new EP5 and E5100 e-bike drives

The two new e-bike drive systems from Shimano are designed for everyday use, for example by commuters. At first glance, the EP5 and the E5100 are quite similar. The differences can be found in the details.

Shimano EP5: Balanced performance

"As a companion on the ride to work or as a starting point for cycling adventures, the EP5 shines with a mix of reliable performance, excellent value for money and innovative technology," Shimano promises full-bodied in the media release for the new EP5. Whether these big promises will stand up to everyday testing remains to be seen.

With the E-TUBE Project Cyclist app, the EP5 can be customised in detail to suit individual riding styles and personal preferences, according to the manufacturer. For example, up to 15 different support modes can be defined and provided via the app in Fine Tune mode, while the characteristics of the support power, the maximum torque and the power development at the start of the support power can be configured in Basic mode.

Shimano E5100: e-biking for everyday use

In addition to the EP5, Shimano is introducing a second new drive unit, the E5100. According to the manufacturer, this is an affordable, lightweight and compact motor designed for natural support. With a maximum torque of 50 Nm, the E5100 is suitable for commuting and everyday use. With its lightweight and responsive drive unit, the E5100 is intended to bridge the gap between classic cycling and e-biking, according to Shimano.
