Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5: launch date set
The Korean company has invited guests to the presentation of its new folding smartphones. Find out when you can watch the event and what rumours have been circulating about the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 here.
The Samsung event will take place on Wednesday 26 July in Seoul. The manufacturer claims: "Join the Flip Side" and adorns the graphics for the event with a flip phone. This is a clear reference to the successor to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4.
Samsung introduced the small Galaxy Z Flip 4 folding smartphone last year along with its larger, longitudinally foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold 4. This is likely to be the case again this year with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 as the successor. There are already some images of both new smartphones circulating online.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 with larger external display
The images of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 show some of the new features. The most obvious is the larger external display compared to its predecessor. It is said to have grown from 1.9 inches to 3.4 inches and now covers almost the entire front. The two cameras are located in a recess. They are said to be two 12-megapixel cameras, a main camera and an ultra-wide-angle camera.
The question is what can be done with the Flip 5's enlarged external display. It is said that Google has adapted some apps, such as Google Maps or YouTube, for this purpose.
The internal display has not yet shown any changes in size and resolution compared to its predecessor.
The chipset is said to come from Qualcomm. It is said to be the Galaxy version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. As in the Galaxy S23 Ultra, for example, the high-performance processor core is slightly higher clocked.
According to the images, the phone comes in four colours: cream, grey-black, light green and purple. This is also confirmed by the leaks from TechnizoConzept.
There is also a picture that shows how flush the Flip 5 can be closed. This did not work so elegantly with the predecessor.
Samsung Galaxy Fold 5: design remains - hardware improved
The hardware of the Fold 5 is said to have been upgraded, but the design and size appear to remain the same. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 customised for Samsung is also likely to be installed here. Otherwise, the images leaked so far show no differences to the previous model. Hopefully the hinge can be closed flush here too.
Enough rumours, here's what happens next
There will be a livestream of the event in South Korea on 26 July at 1 pm our time. You can watch it on YouTube or on the Samsung website. Afterwards, it will be easier to assess how Samsung's new foldables compare to competitors such as the Oppo Find N2 Flip and the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra.
And if there's no special edition of Star Wars with an event slogan like "Join the Flip Side", I'll be sorely disappointed.
