Record sales of treadmills
The sale of treadmills is going well: The online retailer Galaxus recorded sales growth of 85% in 2024 compared to the previous year. In the second half of the year in particular, sales figures rose significantly across DACH. And the trend is continuing: In January, customers already bought 64% more treadmills compared to the same month last year.
During the pandemic, they sold like hot cakes: Treadmills. Demand fell briefly in 2022, only to pick up again in the following years. In 2024, sales figures exploded: with an increase of 85%, the sports equipment made an impressive comeback.
Step by step to a sportier you
This trend shows that more and more people are opting to buy a treadmill in order to exercise flexibly and regardless of weather conditions and opening hours. "The trend towards self-optimisation probably also plays a role here: many people track their movements via smartwatch - if they haven't reached their daily target, they go for a quick run on the treadmill," suspects Nina Gurt, who is responsible for parts of the sports range at Galaxus. "I'm convinced that the treadmill will also be used more and more often in the home office - a relaxed walk during the team meeting, twice as productive, so to speak," adds Nina with a smile.
Jogging indoors instead of freezing outside
The increase was particularly noticeable in the second half of 2024, when 51% more treadmills were sold than in the first half of the year. The rising sales figures during this period indicate that many people are using the cooler months to pursue their fitness goals. And treadmills seem to be a welcome alternative to outdoor activities during the cold season.
Running into the new year
The positive trend continues in 2025. By the 23rd of January, 64% more treadmills had already been sold than in the whole of January 2024, making treadmills the sixth best-selling sporting goods of the year.
This suggests that some people started the new year with a resolution to live a more active and healthier life.
Have you also resolved to start the new year more actively? To go jogging more often? And do you prefer running outside or on the treadmill? Feel free to share your opinion in the comments column.
