Record-breaking June for Galaxus as sunscreen sales hit all-time high

Sun cream sales at Galaxus hit an all-time high in June 2023, with the online retailer recording a 129 per cent increase in sales compared to last June. The striking thing? Sun creams with a high sun protection factor (SPF) are particularly in demand.

We all know that UV radiation is strongest in summer. It’s also no surprise that when summertime hits, sun cream sales go up in both brick-and-mortar stores and online. Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that Galaxus customers bought more sunscreen online in the first half of 2023 than in any of the boom years of online shopping characterised by the pandemic.

More than double the quantity of sun cream sold

This year, outdoor sportspeople and sun worshippers have been going all out with ordering protective sprays, creams and lotions from Galaxus. Compared with 2022, sales rose by 80 per cent in the first six months of this year. This means sales in the first half of 2023 outperformed the first six months of 2022 – a year characterised by strong sales induced by the pandemic.

This year has seen the most sun cream deliveries to Galaxus’s EU customers take place in June – that’s 129 per cent more than in June of last year. Sunscreen is currently the sixth most-ordered product on Galaxus, behind diapers, USB cables, printer ink, smartphone cases and batteries.

The higher the better

One apparent trend when looking at the data is that 8 of the 10 best-selling sun creams have an SPF of 50. «People are increasingly taking high sun protection factors into account when buying sunscreen. Not only that, but the sustainability of sun protection products is also becoming more and more relevant to customers,» explains Martina Tatavitto, Category Business Manager at Galaxus. She adds: «We’re working on making further improvements to these aspects of our product data to make it easier for customers to decide which sunscreen to go for.»

This trend is bound to please the Krebsliga Schweiz (Swiss Cancer League). For years, the organisation has been warning against the negative consequences of UV radiation, giving advice (in German) on how people can best protect themselves and their skin. Comparable cancer awareness organisations in Germany, Austria and across the EU provide similar support.
