Pia’s Picks: soft-glow lamps
As someone who loves soft, scattered light, I have a thing for lamps with fabric shades. I even like them when the lamps are off.
There tend to be two types of people when it comes to lighting. You’re either Team Ceiling Light or Team Candlelight/Pitch Dark. Personally, I’m the latter. My ceiling lamp is purely decorative, and I have at least three candles in every room to create a cosy atmosphere.
However, since I can’t be bothered to keep rooting around for my lighter and lighting every single candle individually, I’ve found myself some alternatives: lots of little, artificial lights with the soft glow of candles. Lamps with fabric shades create the best effect, really dialling down the glare. That’s why they’re at the top of my watch list right now.

The best thing about wool, linen or cotton lampshades is that the fabric looks warm when the light’s on. At the same time, they create the appearance of warmth during the day – unlike glass or metal, they have warm surfaces. Another plus is that you can put table and floor lamps with fabric shades pretty much anywhere. Even at eye level, the gentle light they exude doesn’t feel harsh. The same goes for wall-mounted models. They’re simple, emitting a soft glow next to your bed or even on the ceiling if you prefer your overhead lights to be more than just decorative.
