OnePlus extends update guarantee for its smartphones from 2023
OnePlus wants to provide its smartphones with updates for four and five years from 2023. However, the promise only applies to new releases and not to devices that have already been introduced.
OnePlus has announced that it will provide its smartphones with new OxygenOS versions for four generations starting in 2023. This is usually equivalent to four major Android updates spread over four years. Security updates are to be available for five years, as company boss Pete Lau among others confirmed on Twitter.
Promise only applies to new smartphones
The new update periods, however, only apply to smartphones OnePlus introduces from 2023 onwards. For "older" devices such as the OnePlus 10 Pro, it will remain at three and four years.
With this announcement, OnePlus is moving closer to the EU's planned Ecodesign Directive. It is currently being agreed and, as things stand, will prescribe security updates for five years. However, this will probably not be calculated from the start of sales, but from the end of sales - and thus, depending on the device, longer than five years.
The extended security updates will not be possible.
OnePlus' extended update periods are good, but will no longer be a special feature in a few years.
When I was but a young student, I'd sit in my friend's living room with all my classmates and play on his SuperNES. Since then I've had the opportunity to test out all the newest technology for you. I've done reviews at Curved, Computer Bild and Netzwelt, and have now arrived at Galaxus.de.
