Samsung Galaxy S22: Three new phones in two designs
by Dominik Bärlocher
The Galaxy Tab S8 is now also available in a large ultra version. Samsung's latest tablet generation is thus available in three display sizes.
The touchscreens of the Galaxy Tab S8, Tab S8+ and Tab S8 Ultra are 11 inches, 12.4 inches and 14.6 inches. The largest variant in particular is likely to be an attempt to compete with the iPad Pro.
Together with the optionally available keyboard cover, the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra becomes a laptop replacement with Android 12. The latest version of the operating system is also preinstalled on the other two Tab S8s. But only on the Ultra version does Samsung give you more storage to choose from. The working memory reaches up to 16 gigabytes and the internal storage up to 512 gigabytes - in addition to 8 and 12 or 128 and 256 gigabytes that are also available on the Tab S8 and Tab S8+.
In return, there is a restriction in the color selection. The Tab S8 Ultra is only available in Graphite. The two smaller variants are also available in silver and pink.
All three tablets feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, are optionally available with a 5G or LTE modem, and have the S Pen included. There are always two cameras on the back. A main camera with 13-megapixel resolution and a 6-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera. The Tab S8 Ultra has an extra front-facing camera. In addition to the 12-megapixel camera in all tablets, the largest tablet has a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera for selfies.
The three tablets charge their battery via a USB-C port with up to 45 watts. The battery capacity also increases with the display size and ranges from 8000 mAh in the Tab S8 to 10,090 mAh in the Tab S8+ and 11,200 mAh in the Tab S8 Ultra. In the same order, the tablets get thinner: from 6.3 to 5.7 and 5.5 millimeters.
The displays of the tablets each have a refresh rate of 120 hertz. The different screen technologies are no obstacle there. On the 11-inch Tab S8 with a resolution of 2560×1600 pixels, you look at an LTPS TFT display. Samsung installs a Super AMOLED display in the 12.4-inch (2800×1752 pixels) Tab S8+ and the 14.6-inch (2960×1848 pixels) Tab S8 Ultra. The fingerprint sensor is located in the display, whereas the Tab S8 has it on the side of the casing.
Pre-orders should be possible starting today, and sales will start on February 25. The recommended retail prices start at 749 Euros and 729 Swiss francs for the Galaxy Tab S8, at 949 Euros and 929 Swiss francs for the Galaxy Tab S8+, and at 1149 Euros and 1129 Swiss francs for the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra.
When I was but a young student, I'd sit in my friend's living room with all my classmates and play on his SuperNES. Since then I've had the opportunity to test out all the newest technology for you. I've done reviews at Curved, Computer Bild and Netzwelt, and have now arrived at Galaxus.de.
