HTC U23 Pro review: average smartphone with two major snags
by Jan Johannsen
The HTC U24 Pro could currently be the best smartphone with a headphone jack. You can still find them more often on inexpensive entry-level devices, but only rarely on well-equipped mid-range models.
Headphone jack and memory expansion sound like old smartphone times. However, the HTC U24 Pro is up to date with an OLED display and Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, among other things - for a mid-range smartphone.
The Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 - Qualcomm's current chipset for the mid-range - is backed by a decent twelve gigabytes of RAM. This makes the HTC U24 Pro not the most powerful smartphone, but still very usable. Compared to its predecessor from 2023, the smartphone skips a chip generation.
The 6.8-inch OLED display offers a full HD+ resolution (2436 × 1080 pixels) and a maximum refresh rate of 120 hertz. The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass. HTC does not mention exactly which version. However, it is unlikely to be worse than Victus on the predecessor. The entire housing is IP67 waterproof and should survive 30 minutes in 1.5 metres of water.
The three cameras on the back of the U24 Pro are a 50-megapixel main camera and a 50-megapixel telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom. The ultra-wide-angle camera only has 8 megapixels. The front camera again has 50 megapixels for selfies.
You can expand the internal memory of 256 gigabytes with a microSD card. Part of the memory is occupied by Android 14, which serves as the operating system. There are still no improvements to be seen in the update policy compared to the predecessor. HTC only guaranteed security updates for the predecessor for two years.
The battery of the HTC U24 Pro has a slightly below-average capacity of 4600 mAh. It accepts up to 60 watts via cable and 15 watts wirelessly. The 3.5 mm connection for headphone cables is supplemented by Bluetooth 5.3 for wireless connections.
The HTC U24 Pro will be available soon. The recommended retail price in Germany is 549 euros. I have not received any information in francs for Switzerland. <p
As a primary school pupil, I used to sit in a friend's living room with many of my classmates to play the Super NES. Now I get my hands on the latest technology and test it for you. In recent years at Curved, Computer Bild and Netzwelt, now at Digitec and Galaxus.
