Home accessories from hell – why are these make-up organisers so ugly?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say. But the following products from our range there’s no discussion. They’re hideous.

Fellow editor Pia Seidel and I agree that some products in the Galaxus range are appalling, not appealing. That’s why we created the series named «Home accessories from hell». This episode’s all about design no-gos for beauty fans.

1. Superfluous sponge holders

For all of you who didn’t get the memo yet: your make-up sponge doesn’t need a chair. Sure, make-up tools need a place to dry where they won’t leave stains on your table. But does your sponge really need a throne for this? Besides, thrones are always ugly. Without any exception. I’ll take the stain on my table any day.

2. Useless beauty fridges

I must admit, there was a time when I would’ve wanted one myself. Yes, I’m talking about a fridge for my skincare products. I acknowledge how absurd that sounds. And I’m glad to say I’ve gone off the idea and never invested my money in this monstrosity in the first place. The idea of storing products in a cool place for a longer shelf life and an extra freshness boost may make sense in theory. But to actually have this bulky piece of junk, which ultimately offers too little space and consumes far too much electricity, in your room is borderline mad.

3. Kitschy brush cups and holders

Want to keep your brushes to hand at all times? Then spare yourself (and everyone who enters your room) those tacky mugs. All three of these finds from hell take me right back to the 2010s, when my taste still roughly equalled that of a pound store. You’re better off picking out something from a second-hand shop. It’s cheaper and more personal. A nice mug, a small vase or a tin pen holder featuring your favourite cartoon character. Anything except for these:

4. Acrylic nightmares

I actually find simple acrylic containers a really nice solution for organising drawers. But if they start taking over the flat, I lose my cool. These three beauty organisers take tacky to the extreme: kitschy ombré acrylic, a wild combination with a wooden look and a space shuttle with an acrylic top. This trio from hell gives me goosebumps. The bad kind.

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
