Hero Hockey: the successor of Klask
Following «Klask», game developer Mikkel Bertelsen has launched «Hero Hockey». It’s a game of skill involving magnets. But is it better than it’s predecessor? Here come the test results.
Just under two years ago, the skill game Klask took the world by storm. Today, there are even world championships. The creator of the game, Mikkel Bertelsen, is now launching a modified version: Hero Hockey. Can it compete with its predecessor?
The rules of Hero Hockey are almost the same as for Klask. Two players try to shoot a ball into the opponent’s goal with their pawn, which is controlled by a magnet under the game board. The first to get six points wins the game. No longer a feature: the small white penalty points. In Klask, they’re the ones that stick to your pawn if you get too close to another one. Now, the magnetic pawns hold a stick in their hands, which increases their range and shooting power. Hence the word hockey in the name of the game. Although, the sticks look more like baseball bats.
First impression: better than Klask?
I’ll admit, the stick does add more dynamic to the game. It makes the balls fly faster and it allows you to cover a larger field in defence. However, I do miss those white penalty points. It’s a central element that gives Klask that bit of extra spice.
I’m also disappointed with the materials used. All plastic? Really? Compared to the wood used in Klask, the plastic in Hero Hockey feels cheap. The game board wobbles on the table. You need to hold it down when you’re playing. What’s more, I’m not too confident about the feet and their stability. Setting up the game a few times will undoubtedly wear the thin plastic down, causing it to eventually snap.
If you already own Klask and love it, it might be worth checking out Hero Hockey. It certainly makes for a fun change. If you’re a newcomer, I recommend the original made of wood. You’ll enjoy it more and for longer.
