European Football Championship 2024: Explore the stadiums with Google Maps

The European Football Championship kicks off in Germany on Friday. The opening match between Germany and Scotland at the Allianz Arena in Munich is coming up. To coincide with this, eight of the ten European Championship stadiums will be available in "Immersive View", as Google announced in a blog post. In this way, you can check parking facilities or access to public transport, for example. You can also get information about the weather and temperature before football matches. Or are you unsure which entrance you need to go to for your visit to the stadium and what the quickest route to your seat is? No problem. This will also be temporarily set up in the app for the European Football Championship.

What is "Immersive View"?

With the "Immersive View" function, you can explore selected sights and exciting places in a 3D view. Thanks to advances in artificial intelligence and computer vision, Immersive View combines billions of street and aerial images to generate a comprehensive digital image of our world. It also provides you with useful information such as weather data, traffic situations and the occupancy of a particular location. In Switzerland, for example, Immersive View is available in Zurich for the National Museum, Grossmünster, Fraumünster, Kunsthaus and St Peter's Church.

More functions for EM drivers

If you want to watch one of the football matches live in the stadium or at one of the public viewing events, Google Maps offers you other useful functions. For example, you can use Google Maps to check the train connections to your destination. You can also get real-time information about trains directly in the app. And delays are the order of the day with Deutsche Bahn, more a rule than an exception. So here's a tip in passing. Never rely on Deutsche Bahn and better set off early.

Furthermore, as a car driver, the app's "fuel-saving routes" function shows you the most fuel- or energy-efficient route, if this is not already the fastest. The "alternative routes to destination" function in turn offers the user various options for travelling. However, this feature is currently only available within the four German European Championship cities of Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Cologne. If you have activated car navigation, you will also be shown public transport and walking routes if these options are comparable in terms of time, faster or more practical. This function will be rolled out further in Google Maps in the coming weeks.

During the European Championships, the app will also temporarily display the fan zones and official public viewing spots in the cities.

"Immersive View for Routes" in Berlin

The "Immersive View for Routes" is now available in the first city in Germany: Berlin. This feature allows you to preview every step of your journey, regardless of whether you are travelling by car, on foot or by bike. If you are looking for a route in Berlin, simply tap on the "Immersive View" preview. You will then get a multi-dimensional view of your entire route from start to finish. This way, you can prepare for every turn with detailed visual turn-by-turn directions as if you were there. Simulated traffic and weather conditions also help you plan when you should set off via a time slider. The function will be available in other German cities in the coming months.
