The Osmo Pocket 2 will be available from the end of the month and brings numerous improvements compared to its predecessor. For example, a new sensor, a new lens and new accessories.

The Osmo Pocket is a gimbal and camera in one, and in pocket format. The easily transportable and unobtrusive gadget is very popular. Today DJI presented the successor to the Osmo Pocket. The Osmo Pocket 1 has been on the market for less than two years, but DJI is bringing a pretty comprehensive update.

New sensor, new lens

The new sensor has a diagonal of 1/1.7 inches - slightly more than the 1/2.3 inches of its predecessor. This means that the light sensitivity and dynamic range should also be slightly better.

The resolution is 64 megapixels. That's a lot. However, photos are shot in 16 megapixels as standard. DJI probably uses the same process here as with the Mavic Air 2 drone. There, four pixels are combined into one in order to improve the dynamic range, which in my experience works very well. There is an HDR mode for videos, which is also reminiscent of the Mavic Air 2. In this HDR mode, the highest resolution is 2.7K (2720×1530) at 30 fps. Without HDR, UHD and 60 fps are possible.

If you do not use the HDR function, you can take photos in full resolution or zoom in up to 8x with reduced resolution. Full HD with 4x zoom is possible in the same way.

The lens of the Osmo Pocket 2 has a wider angle of view. 93 degrees corresponds to a focal length of around 21 mm in full format. The 80 degrees of its predecessor correspond to around 26 mm. At f/1.8, the lens is also slightly faster than its predecessor (f/2).

Other innovations

Four microphones are built into the Osmo Pocket 2. They are used to locate the audio source in three dimensions and adjust the sound accordingly. The new gimbal is also said to have effective wind noise reduction.

The AI Editor is designed to make editing easier or even create it automatically, with AI standing for the ubiquitous Artifical Intelligence.

You might be more interested in the accessories. Not all of it is new, but DJI is taking a big step forward here. The standard scope of delivery includes a detachable mini joystick and a tripod mount. There is now a Creator Combo, which already includes important accessories.

The Creator Combo also contains:

  • a wireless microphone
  • A micro tripod
  • an all-purpose handle that includes a tripod thread and a USB port
  • a wide-angle attachment that increases the angle of view to 110 degrees

In addition, there will be other optional accessories such as an underwater housing.
