Bang on "The Witcher": Henry Cavill is replaced by Liam Hemsworth
Lead actor Henry Cavill will only be available for the third season of "The Witcher". After that, Liam Hemsworth will take over the monster hunt. Are we witnessing the beginning of the end?

Actor Henry Cavill, who builds computers in his spare time and almost missed his role as Superman because he didn't pick up the phone in the middle of a "World of Warcraft" raid". Now those same fans need to be strong: The British muscleman will put down his medallion and swords after the third "The Witcher" season. Netflix confirmed this in an official press release

So the end of the series? Not at all. The streaming giant is taking the opportunity to sweeten the bitter pill with some sugar: There will be a fourth season, according to the press release. Then Cavill has his say. "My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been full of monsters and adventures," Cavill says, "but in my place, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will take over the role of White Wolf. I'm excited to see how Liam will portray this fascinating and nuanced man."

The beginning of the end of "The Witcher"?
It seems unlikely that fans will appreciate the change. Cavill is incredibly popular with fans of "The Witcher" games and series. Not only because of his open and nerdy passion for gaming and computing - a rarity in glamorous Hollywood. Also because he plays the grumpy Geralt von Riva in the same bad mood as "The Witcher" author Andrzej Sapkowski describes him in the books. And those who watch the series in the original sound can hardly distinguish Cavill's voice from the popular deep, growling voice from the games.
So Cavill's bar is pretty damn high. The risk that Hemsworth will fail this and Cavill's popularity is great. It's quite possible that the fourth season will also be the last. But until that happens, fans still have some Witcher action left: "The Witcher: Blood Origin" will be released on 25 December and is a live-action spin-off that explores the creation of the first Witcher prototype. And then the third and Cavill's final "The Witcher" season follows in the summer of 2023.
